How to Store Matcha for Maximum Freshness

Matcha is one of the most delicate teas in the world. Because it is finely ground into powder, it reacts far more quickly to its environment than loose-leaf tea. Exposure to air, light, heat, and moisture directly affects its flavor, aroma, and color. When matcha comes into contact with oxygen, oxidation begins.

This causes the vibrant green color to fade and the taste to shift from smooth and umami-rich to dull or bitter. Heat and light accelerate this process, while moisture can lead to clumping and a loss of freshness.

For optimal storage, matcha should always be kept in an airtight container. Traditional metal tins work especially well, as they protect the powder from light and help maintain stable conditions. Store the tin in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight, warm shelves, or kitchen heat sources. Once opened, refrigerating matcha is highly recommended, particularly for higher-quality matcha. The container must be sealed tightly. Before opening a refrigerated tin, allow it to return to room temperature, this prevents condensation from forming inside and damaging the powder.

Even with ideal storage, matcha is best enjoyed fresh. For the best balance of flavour, aroma, and colour, we recommend consuming it within four to eight weeks after opening. Proper storage ensures every cup remains smooth, vibrant, and true to its origin.
